Central Sterilizing Aide - Surgery
Job Summary: Cleans and sterilizes all surgical instruments for surgery, Out-patient clinic, Obstetrics, Emergency Room nursing services, physician clinics and ancillary departments. Sterilizing Supply is staffed week days, excluding holidays. If instruments need to be sterilized on week-ends, holidays or evenings (after scheduled cases completed), the Sterile Supply Technician, if available, may be called back to clean and sterilize instruments.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Must be knowledgeable in processing and reprocessing procedures and techniques including sterilization monitoring procedures. Complete disinfecting process with high level disinfectant.

Must be knowledgeable of wrapping/packaging techniques and sterilizer(s) operation. Keep instruments sets current in the C.S. notebook. This will include written list of all instruments in set, with picture and date reviewed.

Assist with cleaning between procedures in the OR, scope room at the end of day while instruments are being ran through the washer decontamination machine.

Sterilize and monitor incoming instrument packaging and cleanliness from other departments and clinics. Questionable packaging and instruments may be returned to sender. Issues should be brought to the attention of the OR Director.

Instruments from departments and clinics will be logged in and logged out to ensure instruments are returned to proper areas. A copy will be kept by technician for records.

Responsible for ensuring cleaning schedule is being followed and completed as directed/recommended. Complete Infection Control procedures as recommended. Assistance from OR staff will be given when needed. Maintain log for temperature and eye wash station checks.

Care, cleaning, and processing of endoscopes as well as operating equipment to process and sterilize. Use and trained on use of Steris 1E and Scope Buddy. Competency check list will be available.

Responsible for care and operation of washer – decontamination machine.

Assist with patient transfers.

Follow universal precautions.

Wear PPE’s when handling contaminated instruments.

Follow aseptic technique when assistance is needed in surgery.

Assist with re-stocking of supplies in the OR (Pre and Post) & C.S. departments. Monitor Cidex usage and notify Director when supply is low.

Maintain safe and clean environment for patients, co-workers and self, per hospital policies and procedures.

Immediately available for instrument cleaning after a surgery.

Responsible for oversight of steam generator and reporting any problems to OR supervisor.

Perform other duties as assigned.
